look for open source gis softwares
a quick google search will open you a whole huge new world
just to to start
grass gis for analisys
postgres/postgis for data store and much more
mapserver - maptools (maplab) for web mapping
ossim for remote sensing
gstat for geostatistical analisys
all these softwares can run on normal hardware while commercial
softwares need newest hardware to run with decent performance.

the price is a little bit steeper learning curve
