Subject: Re: [gislist] google maps
Date:  02/15/2005 03:00:02 PM
From:  spatialgis

I spent yesterday at geotec in Vancouver and the google map portal was mentioned on numerous occasions. I got the impression from people that overall it's great for the industry as mapping and GIS is getting a big plug by a key player.

There's some issues of concern particularly the use of proprietary rather than open source solutions for driving the service but given the business model that can't be a huge surprise (I believe ESRI is behind much of the IMS).

People are also pretty excited about Keyhole which is part of Google and the prospect for future enhancements to the service.. should be exciting. Given Google's reach into various arenas (eg. they are donating server space to Wikipedia) there's likely lots of hype coming in the future.
