That's right. "GIS" per se is general purpose and analysis oriented.

These apps are special purpose and search + visualization oriented.=20
Companies like MSFT and Google know (or can buy experts in) how to search=20
and visualize.

Tim Smith asked who builds them? any group of clever programmers, better=20
if they are not constrained by notions of what GIS is supposed to be, or do.
