Subject: RE: [gislist] google maps

From:  Sonny Parafina

Anthony,

I'll echo Frank's comments and say that they are different things. I see
google maps as great thing because it is yet another service we can consume
in the OGC framework. If it becomes a defacto standard, then it is easily
accomodated in the OGC Service Oriented Architecture. Regardless of the
technology, it would be trivial to proxy Google maps and provide a WMS
interface. In fact, if anyone at google is listening, I think they should
provide a WMS interface.

BTW, I don't think this OGC-baiting and a good question.

Anthony,

I am impressed by the job that Google has done on it's mapping
application, but it is not fundamentally different than mapquest or
a variety of other consumer mapping web applications.

The web mapping (WMS) work at OGC is aimed at achieving a
degree of interoperability that allows layers of data from a variety
of different back end servers to be used in a variety of kinds of
clients. That is certainly not achieved by Google, nor was it
their intention.

It seems like an apple and oranges comparison to me. They are
working to achieve different things.

One lesson I would tend to take away from this is that there is a
large part of the market that is adequately served by a one-vendor
and inflexible solution like google maps. I think more complex
technology and interoperability are useful in more sophisticated
applications and uses.

Damn, and I promised myself last year I wouldn't rise to your
OGC-baiting again.

Best regards,
