Subject: [gislist] Google Maps and the OGC
Date:  02/17/2005 01:20:02 PM
From:  Landon Blake

I believe Anthony brings up some valid points about the latest debut of =
Google Maps and the relevance of the OGC. It got my wheels cranking a =
little bit, and I'm afraid I must now open Pandora's box.

I noticed that mebmership at the OGC is very expensive, (at least for =
voting members), this would lead me to believe that voting membership is =
controlled mainly by large corporations and government agencies. Do you =
think that this excludes open source software projects and small =
companies from the decision making process? I realize the OGC gains a =
lot of its weight from these big (and paying) members, but I think the =
input from the small players is also important.

What are your thoughts? Are there any alternatives to the open standards =
work at the OGC? Specifically for open source projects, or small =
commercial software designers?

I know only of the GeoAPI, which is close, but Java specific....

http://geoapi.sourceforge.net/

I know the OGC is involved in a work that should benfit the community as =
a whole, and I can't criticize with a loud voice, as I'm not very =
familiar with the OGC process. Do I raise a valid issue? Has it already =
been addressed by the OGC?

The Sunburned Surveyor
