Subject: Re: [gislist] locating wap/gprs device && future GIS products
Date:  02/20/2005 03:40:02 PM

Well, it is not too complicated to serve maps embeded within wml or
xhtml pages. Bu I'd think not just about maps served to a cellphone. For
example, tourist wants to know how to reach destination point B from his
present location A, and what his present location is. Maybe he wants to
locate the nearest hotel (bus station, hospital, etc...). He could query
some wap.way.net for this. The service would attempt to identify his
location and give instructions like -You are in AAA street, go ahead to
building Nr 58 (red bricks), turn left to BBB streat, go ahead to
building Nr 101 (white concrete), turn left, etc...). Tiny maps could be
used to shematically show a route on a screen, but the more important
part would be routing directives, not graphics.
Just an idea... City navigation system based on technology other than GPS.

There was a post about "future of GIS products". I would think these
were probably not products but GIS services that might be most important
in future for ordinary people.

>:: FYI: Last year, I was surprised to be able to view a MapServer application on the Samsung browser of my WAP device. Although, my attempts to view other MapServer applications resulted in Content/Browser Errors [#607/#902]. But when MapServer did work, I was able to enjoy basic functionality- zoom etc. I have not had the same success with any ArcIMS application.

So I suggest that you make sure you would be satisfied with the usefulness of inch-long maps before you invest time into making them, and then take a look at MapServer.
