Hello! the Listers:
I am seeking for a fast way to convert 1000 coverages to grids, and calculate mean cell values of the 1000 grids. The coverages are types of covered areas (category data showing in 10th) in a same region with same attribute formats. The problems are (1) that the attribute field of the cover types used to convert to grid is in string format, and (2)different coverage files have different numbers of the types in this field. My approach is:
-- Add a numeric field (Long, 8) into the 1000 attribute tables:
-- Use the field calculator to convert the string values to numbers in the new field (we can not directly convert strings to decimal numbers by “Copy and Paste” in ArcGIS):
-- Use this new field as the “Z-value” field for the Features to Rasters conversion process.
I can do it in one file each time. But, it is not practical to do it manuly for the 1000 files in a limited period!
I can’t find any script or batch file for adding field and converting multiple feature files to grids in ESRI’s web site, neither on Internet. I also tried ArcGIS 9 ModelBuilder: using the available Toolboxes, than save and add scripts. But, I can’t make any of them works. :-(
My questions are:
-- Is there any way to do the above task in batch directly from coverages to grids?
-- If not, we must to convert the coverages to shapefiles first. Is it easier to approach it in shapefiles than in coverages by using ArcView GIS?
I am using the full-version of ArcGIS v9.0. I also have ArcGIS v.8.3 and ArcView GIS 3 in this lab.
Please help! Any method/script (even it can only do partial of the processes) and suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much in advance for your valuable time and experience!
Wanli
