I suspected as much. Time to dump Eudora...

here it is, below:

code =93

The gvSIG project has released version 0.3 executables, and also has=20
released the application source code under a GNU/GPL free=20
software licence, which you=92ll find it at the projects=92 official=20
homepage: <http://www.gvsig.gva.es/>http://www.gvsig.gva.es

For those who don't know the project, gvSIG is a tool for handling=20
geographical information. It has a friendly interface, is capable to access=
=20
several (raster and vector) formats. It will integrate in a single view=20
both local and remote data through WMS or WFS. (WMS now working)

GvSIG Is aimed to final users of geographical information, professionals=20
or public administration anywhere in the world (at present it has a=20
Spanish, Valencian, English, French and Italian interface).

Because of its free software nature (open source) we think that it=92s of=20
great interest for the international community of developers and,=20
especially for university environments because it=92s an interesting R+D=20
component for projects. In fact, special care has been taken to make=20
it extensible in such a way that the possible developers can improve the=20
application=92s features easily, as well as making totally new applications=
=20
using the libraries of gvSIG ( as long as they respect the GPL license ).

Another interesting aspect of the web is the mailing list (one for users=20
and other for developers ) that should help to make GvSIG a =93live=94=
project=20
which can easily include outside efforts and coordinate initiatives, and a=
=20
new section of free maps since we understand that in the area of=20
geographical information, free access to these data is essential, as one=20
element in creating a more dynamic economy.

Finally we should mention that gvSIG, although conceived as a GIS client,=20
is aware of the movements in the world of spatial information and to the=20
global (GSDI) and European initiatives such as INSPIRE ( INfrastructure=20
SPatial InfoRmation in Europe, http://inspire.jrc.it/home.html), and in=20
Spain is called IDEE (Infraestructura de Datos Espaciales Espa=F1ola).=20
gvSIG in this field becomes a project that provides an SDI client=20
application based on free software.

gvSIG is placing its bet on free software, as a road towards=20
technological independence, for the possibility of creating more and=20
stronger local economies and, as a direct consequence, optimization of=20
investment and scarce resources.

We hope that you enjoy this initiative and remind you to send us an e-mail=
=20
(gvsig@gva.es ) and to visit the two mailing lists (see web page), one for=
=20
users and the other for developers.

End of gvSIG 0.3 news
