select the features and then right click the layer in the table of contents.
toggle to Data > Export Data. and you will reach a dialog which can export
to shapefile, personal geodatabase, or sde feature class.

Hi Everyone,
We upgraded to ArcGIS 9 today and I was wondering how you convert
selected features to a shapefile in 9? I was able to convert it to a
layer file but I need to modify the data separately from the source
data. Hopefully this makes sense.
