Subject: Re: [gislist] Project idea..
Date:  03/21/2005 09:45:01 AM
From:  Tim Smith

How about a remote image logger, with camera, gps receiver and GSM
modem. A scientist (geologist?) in the field takes photographs of their
work which are automatically sent to a server (via GSM) where a webpage
is updated with the photo, a gps stamp and any comments the field
scientist has entered. The logger could be a PDA with the modem and gps
devices attached. You write a simple application for the PDA to send the
data.
The web site which uses the logged data would use some web-based GIS
application - using MapXtreme etc.

I did this for a friend who was doing a cycle ride across europe for
charity and who wanted a simple way of logging his position periodically
with a photo. The website automatically updated his route on a map with
the images so we could see in real-time where he was. This could be
expanded to many other applications.

You could expand this to automatic beacons which you attach to (large)
animals, perhaps. You could monitor their location using the GPS and
send a photo back if the animal wandered into a territory that you
pre-define.
