When did we declare 'Moaning Monday' on this gislist: and what did we accomplish? This can get contagious, infectious even: we have people in our office who complain (for sport and recreation) with no expectation of resolution: when offered a solution you get the words you love to hear, 'We don't want a solution, we just want to complain.' That reminds me of the discussion yesterday.
Anyway, I'm guilty of the same hmm, griping, another good word. I received a call from Oracle yesterday: asked if we need the product: well, with the number of GIS licenses on the network, and the amount of data, and the shared resources, the low server performance and processing issues, real time data, and all the other variables for a RDBMS: yes, we need that: no, we haven't convinced anyone with purchasing authority: Dogpatch, USA. Well, at least we had a good laugh together: she must hear that story a lot.
So on to our dilemma about the need for a generic GIS list, the pros and cons of GIS forums, and all the many other GIS vendors, ESRI, MapInfo, and ... the need for a discussion on forums v. company support: I like to use the forums: if a company can support 30,000, 50,000, or more users, more power to them: the response time will lag on company support, however: that's the greatness of forums and user groups: many contributors who can spin off a quick answer before we go to company support (take a number and wait, right).
Once in a while we get a real plum question which no one can answer based on the limits of software (or interest of the group in question, maybe): so we fprward the question to company support for software enhancements, maybe the next version, or two, or three, will cover that improvement. There's a development stage for the software and in the meantime we field test the company software, a symbiotic relationship. That's how it works: we can't expect the software company to release a 'bullet proof' version: we need to provide the company some feedback. Where have you been all these years: that's the way it works (to those who didn't know that). Ha, again.
