How about using Radarsat imagery to help map and remove landmines. I see that as a positive use of technology in direct response to our human practices of warfare.
I also think things like Community Mapping Network show a real positive use of geomatics to contribute to our culture and society as a whole.

Hi everyone,
On a completely different topic -- I am preparing a paper on the role that geospatial technologies (from GPS to GIS to remote sensing to ...) play in creating / supporting geographies of hope and fear. While critics point to the central role that GIS and GPS play in modern warfare as evidence of the fear people associate with geospatial technologies, and while remote sensing has always been known as the surveillant science, there are many instances of these technologies providing / promoting hope in society.
I was hoping that the community that participates in this list could provide (specific) examples of how they see geospatial technologies bringing hope to society / individuals, or how geospatial technologies have increased fear in society. All responses, if used in the paper, would of course be sourced.
Thanks,
Brian
