For the fear side of the coin, I once saw an ArcIMS site that allowed you to enter your zip code and it would display the potential nuclear blast radius. It showed the concomitant devastation and misery, with each buffer ring containing the appropriate gory details for its distance from ground zero.

Hi everyone,
On a completely different topic -- I am preparing a paper on the role that geospatial technologies (from GPS to GIS to remote sensing to ...) play in creating / supporting geographies of hope and fear. While critics point to the central role that GIS and GPS play in modern warfare as evidence of the fear people associate with geospatial technologies, and while remote sensing has always been known as the surveillant science, there are many
instances of these technologies providing / promoting hope in society.
I was hoping that the community that participates in this list could provide (specific) examples of how they see geospatial technologies bringing hope to society / individuals, or how geospatial technologies have increased fear in society. All responses, if used in the paper, would of course be sourced.
Thanks,
Brian
