As land cover goes, 1996 isn't too bad (unfortunately). If you're not in a
rush, USGS is (albeit slowly) releasing NLCD 2001 (National Land Cover
Characterization 2001). If you want to keep tabs on your county, the web
site is http://gisdata.usgs.net/website/MRLC/. Impervious Surfaces have
been released for your state, which is a sign that Canopy and Land Cover
will follow. However, in my experience it may be a matter of months before
that happens.
If you haven't already, look for wetlands or coastal studies in your state.

Does anyone know of a source for remote sensing data that shows land cover?
What I am really need is to define wetlands in our county. I have data
from
1996 that covers North Carolina but I prefer something more current if
possible. Being that I work for county government, free is best. If it is
a nominal fee I may be able to talk the bean counters into it.
