Grid clipping is an operation almost everyone needs to perform. Ultimately, the clip region is represented in the GIS (either explicitly or implicitly) as an indicator grid of ones, with zeros (or NoData values) elsewhere. Multiplying a grid by an indicator effectively "clips" it. This is a method that should work with any raster GIS, ArcView 3.x or otherwise.
Learning how to use indicator grids effectively is a key to exploiting the full power of GIS. With them, one easily and efficiently performs many seemingly complex map operations, such as partitioning regions according to their intersections with regions in another layer.
