Hi all,
***** Original Question:
I'm looking for suggestions of Web GIS sites where a person can go to build an overview map of somewhere in the world. For example, a map of Bangladesh or Peru or New Zealand or wherever, including national borders, major cities, hydrography, roads, etc.
I know there are a lot of Web GIS sites out there. So just to clarify, I am NOT looking for: - sites specific to a country (e.g., USA-only GIS site), - sites that only cover specific thematic data (e.g., vegetation mapping), or - downloadable GIS data.
If you know of any sites that provide good overview data and are user-friendly, I'd appreciate hearing about them. I will SUM.
***** Responses:
Many thanks to all who took the time to reply. Unfortunately, several of the replies were about Web GIS software for purchase or sites specific to one country, which was not what I was looking for.
Two suggestions were on topic:
National Geographic's Map Machine http://plasma.nationalgeographic.com/mapmachine/countryprofiles.html - click on a Country Profile, then view the interactive map (thanks to Todd Helt <ToddH@Telemorphic.com>)
www.demis.nl Gallery includes: - an interactive world map - NASA Blue Marble image - satellite image of the Earth (thanks to Ed Dowding, ed@usology.com)

Thanks for the help, sarah
