Subject: [gislist] SUM: ArcGIS mxd question
Date:  05/04/2005 02:25:01 AM
From:  Vassil Vassilev

Thanks to Matt and Sharon Syvertson, Amanda Hargis,
Tripp C. Corbin who have give me the solution to the
question.

The question:
Hi all,
is it possible to edit the mxd file of ArcGIS in such
a way that when it is written on CD (together with the
spatial data) and for example the CD starts from drive
which is different than the drive on which the
original data were, the mxd to be usable.
For example in the old ArcView you could edit the APR
file and replace for example:
c: with ..\
and then it doesn't matter on which drive you starts
the APR.

The solution:
Yes. It is possible. You must simply change the data
path properties to be a "relative path." When you are
in ArcGIS, go to the textual menu bar at the
top of the screen, select "file," then select "Map
Properties." In the map properties dialog box, you
will see a button for "Data Source Options."
One of your options is "Store relative path names."
If you select it and then keep all your data in
"subdirectories of the directory your mxd is in,
your data should be fine when you move it to another
drive or directory.
