Free does have its costs! I checked out geocoder.us and noticed that it had some problems for serious use:
- Locations are based on a straight line from first to last point on the street segment, and do not take into account the shape points in between. This can put your locations well away from the proper street segments, even on adjacent segments.
- Locations are on the centerline of the street segment (when the segment is straight) and not offset to the even or odd side. That is a problem when you want to use the locations to determine which areas they are in, such as Census blocks.
A number of commercial address location engines have the second problem, which is less serious for some uses, but the first problem really is a serious deficiency and should be corrected.
