An excellent resource for free GIS software is http://www.freegis.org/.
re: "free does have its costs" and "you get what you pay for"
Have you thought of joining that software's mailing list so you can discuss the limitations with the developers? Is that even possible with big $$ gis packages, besides an email from their "support team"? The beauty of open source is reporting bugs in the software and seeing them fixed quickly (or if you have the knowledge, contributing yourself). No waiting for a yearly release.
Just give it a chance, you may fall in love.
