Rick,

You can add canadian roads from the Atlas of Canada, the available data
is listed here.

http://atlas.gc.ca/site/english/dataservices/web_map_service.html/#wms

If these sound OK to you, I can add them to a context with a trimmed
down set of layers so they will load faster.

You can even add (and delete) these layers yourself and save the map
configuration as a Web Map Server context (basically an XML file that
configures the layers portrayed). I'll have to check, but I think this
application supports remote contexts, i.e. you can just type in the
client URL and point it at a remotely hosted context file.
