Subject: [gislist] ArcSDE question
Date:  06/13/2005 12:00:05 PM
From:  Paul van Helden

Hi listers,

I need to write custom software that will access an SDE database
(read-only). Working with an Access .MDB dump of an SDE database, I
discovered that the contents of the SHAPE field is exactly the same
format as shapes in a shapefile. However, testing on an actual SDE
database (MS SQL server) I can't get it to work because the field type
of the SHAPE field is being reported as an integer. (Same result with
Enterprise Manager). How do I access the BLOB data in the SHAPE field
directly? The SDE documentation
(http://edndoc.esri.com/arcsde/9.1/capi_concepts/geometry_storage_options.htm)
says the field should be of type "image". Am I doing something wrong, or
am I forced to use the SDE API? If I need to use the API, what do I need
(ArcObjects?) and how much would it cost?

Apologies for asking an ESRI support question here. I'm not an ESRI user.

Thanks,

Paul.
