Subject: Re: [gislist] installing ArcGIS 9.x
Date:  06/16/2005 06:40:01 AM
From:  Tripp C. Corbin

Brian is right you can run ArcView 3.x on the same machine as ArcGIS 9.x without any problem. I am doing it now so I can support clients on both platforms. However if your ArcGIS 9.x is an upgrade for your ArcView 3.x then I don't think the software license will allow you to run both at the same time.

I also recommend you up your RAM to as much as you fit into your machine. ArcGIS is a much bigger resource hog than ArcView 3.x. In that way it is very much like AutoCAD. The cost of the additional RAM will more than pay for itself with less reboots and crashes.

AV 3.x and Arc* 9.x (and 3.x and 8.x for that matter) are entirely
separate and do not really share any file structure.. libraries.. etc..

They will coexist just fine. I've done this before.. it's useful if you
have legacy Avenue stuff especially.. or old extensions, etc.

8.x and 9.x .. don't think those play together (but not sure).

Also, I suggest pumping your ram to 1gb (or more) if your
budget/notebook can handle it.
