I say get the certificate first and get experience, employers find that
more attractive. You can always go back and get the masters, although I
have a hard time understanding how GIS, as nebulous as it is, can be a
masters program. A masters in CS would ultimately be more useful for
the purpose of employment because it can transfer across many disciplines.
