Subject: Re: [gislist] masters vs. certificate
Date:  06/16/2005 11:05:01 AM
From:  Matt Lamborn

Dean -

I think your plans on completing a certificate program first is a
prudent move. This will help to prepare you w/ marketable skills to
enter the workplace (as well as compete w/ many recent graduates who
learned GIS as part of their planning, geography, landscape
architecture, etc. courses). My advice (from personal experience) to
anyone who desires to enter a Master's program is to spend a couple/few
years working first. This will help inform your next move - what program
you want to enter, what course of study/research you'll want to pursue,
etc. It may also happen that you get a GIS cert first, enter the
workplace, find that you love your career/job and never go back to
school (then your ahead tens of thousands of dollars in tuition and no
harm done).
