Subject: Re: [gislist] masters vs. certificate
Date:  06/16/2005 12:20:02 PM
From:  Humberto Perotto

Dean,

The idea of learning GIS as a next step seems really interesting. Several
people have already given you meaningful and interesting opinions about
their own experience. Personally, I think that if you could combine your
knowledge in conservation biology with GIS, that would be quite helpful for
you (So far it has been for me, but again this is just my personal
experience). Those two skills combined (whether you get a certificate or a
master's) may open several doors for you. If you know how to use GIS (and
remote sensing) to answer biological and ecological questions, then you
should be in a good position to look for jobs. Of course, as some postings
already mentioned, the academic part may need to be complemented with work
experience to improve those skills.

My 2 cents, and good luck.

Humberto Perotto
