Subject: Re: [gislist] masters vs. certificate
Date:  06/16/2005 02:50:01 PM
From:  RICK GRAY

Anne,

I am a map lover, too. That's why I ended up in GIS. In the very early 90's I
had the opportunity to return to school after being in the "real world" for many
years. In my second year at university I took a course that included a GIS
component. I was hooked and have since made it my career.

As a web developer, you could take your current skills and enhance them with
some on-line web GIS courses (check out ESRI's virtual campus or others) and
quickly make the transition to Web GIS guru. I believe there are lots of
opportunities there, and with your language skills, you are extremely portable
(even if only in a virtual sense).

Check out your local university library for GIS trade publications (GEOWORLD,
ArcNews, Geospatial Solutions, etc.) for a feel for some of the opportunities.
The articles usually represent a pretty good cross section of the industry.

If you have any specific questions, just ask.
Rick

I have a question related to Dean's, but one step earlier in the process of
career change. I joined the GIS list because I wanted to learn more about
what GIS consists of and whether it would be an interesting next step for
me. I've been a web developer since the hey day started, but have started
to get (1) bored and (2) dispirited at all the commercialism. I've always
been crazy about maps, and am trained as a linguist in 6 languages, so it
seems that somehow all these things might come together nicely. BUT... I
don't know where to start to find out if GIS is for me, and if so, how to go
about learning it. Do I do some academic work, or just jump into the tools?

Anne
