ArcView 3x and 9 can be installed on the same machine with no conflicts (I have both). ArcGIS 9 and ArcView 3 both have their good and bad points. I would not un-install 3. It is very useful for a number of things (I like the projection wizard better than the ArcGIS version). If you have an older version of ArcGIS, though, that is another matter. You must completely un-install older versions of ArcGIS (8x) before installing a newer one.
