Subject: Re: [gislist] masters vs. certificate

From:  Julia.Harrell .. ncmail.net

Hi Anne,

Taking some online classes is a good idea, but the GIS world
is not composed of only commercial vendor offerings anymore.

If you're a bored web developer -and- trained as a linguist
in 6 languages, then your skills should be in high demand working
on internationalizing Open Source GIS projects and translating
the documentation into multiple languages! If you're not
happy with all the commercialism, this could be one way to contribute,
but it may not pay your entire mortgage - after all, it is Open
Source :) It would, however, start getting you very familar with
the software offerings and the FOSS/GIS developer community.

Some places to start might be:

http://mapbuilder.sourceforge.net and http://geoservices.cgdi.ca/mapbuilder/

http://maptools.org/

http://www.refractions.net/
(check the links for these projects:Mapserver, Geoserver, uDig, PostGIS)
