I have to capitalize on Julia's suggestion. :] I am involved in 2 open source projects.
The SurveyOS Project:

And the JUMP Pilot Project, which oversees the development of OpenJUMP:
http://jump-pilot.sourceforge.net/index.php
Both projects are completely supported by volunteers. If you are interested in getting a taste of GIS, especially on the programming end of things, I can introduce you to the teams.
In any case, JUMP would be a simple GIS program you could use to explore some limited features of GIS, without the hefty cost of a commercial product.
