This is an interesting discussion. But maybe the original question should not have been about getting a certificate or a degree in GIS but rather "do I want to get training or an education in GIS". As Michael Goodchild has said, an education "..gives an understanding of the underlying theory and concepts " of GIS whereas training involves the use of specific GIS software packages. Clearly any education in GIS will involve some hands-on experience but even the best training will not be productive in the long run if there is no theory to put the training in its proper context. So I would suggest that one should not look to short term financial issues but rather focus on the long term and then it is a personal decision of how you want to plan your career. And as with the purchase of any product - buyer beware - check out the credentials of organizations offering certificates and degrees. I suggest listers also check out http://www.gisjobs.com/survey/countries.jsp to find data from more than 24,000 respondents from many countries in the GIS field as to what percentage have degrees and certificates, what software is used, etc. Joe Loon Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi
