Subject: [gislist] Autodesk Map and ArcSDE/GIS interconnections
Date:  06/21/2005 08:20:01 AM
From:  Tripp C. Corbin

I got an email asking about the following situation. I also noticed it
was posted on the Autodesk discussion forum. I was wondering if any of
you have any other input to offer. Here is the situation and my initial
reply:
Hi,
Our situation:

We are trying to unify our data source (Oracle 10g locator) in a mixed
environment of Autodesk and ESRI clients (ArcSDE9/ArcGIS9)

1) We are able to connect and can now read and write tables to Oracle
10g
with Autodesk land Desktop 2004 and populate them.

2) We are able to connect and can now can read and write tables to
Oracle
10g with ArcGIS9 through ArcSDE9

what we are unable to achieve is get ArcSDE9/ArcGIS9 to recognize
features
written into Oracle by Autodesk land desktop 2004 or get Autodesk land
Desktop 2004 to
read features written into Oracle by ArcSDE/ArcGIS.

The problem, on the ArcGIS/ArcSDE side we feel, seems to centre on
ArcSDE9
trying to read the tables
written into Oracle10g by Autodesk land Desktop 2004 and not finding a
column that is 'Number(38) NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY' or 'Number(38) NOT NULL
UNIQUE'. (we can't change this once the table is populated)

We are not sure why Autodesk Land Desktop cannot read what ArcSDE/ArcGIS
writes into Oracle10g locator

Does anyone in their experience know the solution to this or if at all
there
is a solution? We are using Oracle 10g locator not Oracle Spatial, could
this be a problem?

Vincent

My initial reply:
I understand, according to sources at Autodesk, that Map only official
supports connections to ArcSDE 8.3 with Oracle 8 or 9. I have seen
successful connections to ArcSDE 9 but again only using Oracle 9. That
may
explain why LDD can not read the data being written by ArcGIS.

Not sure why ArcGIS can not read the data written by LDD as I have never

tried to make that connection. I will see if I dig into that one a bit
more.
