Actually, my case fits exactly with what Bill has outlined. This is one reason I am all for "certification", regardless of how much it really means.
As part of an educational institution, my salary is bracketed according to education level and years experience. The more letters I can tack onto my name, the better the bean counters in payroll like me. Simple as that.
I suspect in many larger corporations, where the people cutting the cheque never actually meet most of the employees, it is similar. Mind you, you still have to be competent to KEEP the job, but given two equally comppetent people, the one with credentials will get paid more than the one without.
Who says life is fair? Just work the system.

But some other will look at the real professional you are and will encourage you to learn more and improve your experience with good educational programs and good incentives (including growing in your company, money reward, etc). My suggestion to you is look at the companies first, get an overall sense of which type of company you are enrolling to, I believe the last type I mentioned are the best ones and those you should focus on, the others are not worth to stay too much longer.
