Subject: Re: [gislist] GIS & Global Change
Date:  07/01/2005 12:15:01 PM
From:  Remko de Lange

Dear Antonio,

Global change issues are very much researched and debated. Global change researches, such as myself in a way, making greatly use of GIS. Many global environmental parameters are measured/observed through instruments on board of satellites. Due to many reasons, of which scanning speed and data storage are two examples, these instruments obtaining data in a digital format. This eventually result in raster data. As specialised GIS's are developed for these raster data (or remote sensing data), not much cross-over occur anymore between let's say ArcGis users and remote sensers (although many GIS tools can be found in all those packages). The software packages they are using are rather divers, but I work with IDL/ENVI, ERDAS/IMAGINE and GAMMA software for instance.
To come back on your requisted leads, which topics do you particular have interest in? I work in the field of glaciology and study the melt and dynamics of Greenland's glaciers. Data of polar regions can be found at: http://nsidc.org/ for example.

Cheers,
Remko

Subject: [gislist] GIS & Global Change
Hi listers,
I have been searching for sometime how GIS could contribute to Global
Change studies but so far my results are not encouraging.
Could any of you provide some good leads?
Many thanks.
Antonio de la Cruz
