You got a nice new notebook, Congratulations !!! I'll tell you my personal experience, As I run the same GIS applications on diversity of Intel platforms, If your GIS application is concrete and well coded, it'll run safely on PIII, and the extra H/W resources will reduce the processing time, if you're running heavy applications consuming hours of processing.
On the other hand, if you deal with a handicapped GIS application, that make you mad when you need a result, specially quickly, the extra H/W resources had nothing to do with this.
I advise you to keep your nice labtob, and spend your time in migrating data and application to it, you have along road to walk.
