Subject: [gislist] FW: arc info server
Date:  08/03/2005 05:00:01 PM
From:  Analisa Gunnell

Hello again everyone,

Well, for those of you who were following my posting on getting a GIS
server and wondering why I never summed up the responses, the reason why
is because we are still deliberating on exactly what we want. We are
now close to making a decision, but have a couple more specific
questions we need help on. Below you will find the specific questions
that our Network Administrator has at this time.

As always, THANK YOU ALL in advance for any thoughts/guidance/or kind
words shared...

Sincerely,

GIS List,

I'm hoping you can answer some questions about building
a terminal server. The purpose of this server will be solely to crunch
data using arc info. It is my understanding that Arc Info only runs on
the windows platform and cannot do multithreading. I plan to buy a twin
processor xeon 3.6ghz processor to allow Arc Info access to one entire
processor while the operating system uses the other. If I'm wrong on
any of these facts please let me know.

My questions are as follows. Is Arc Info fully
compatible with 2003 terminal server or should I use 2000 terminal
server?

How much ram is too much?

Keeping in mind that no one will ever actually look at
the monitor attached to this server, does it make sense to spend a lot
of money on a graphics card? Does Arc Info use the processing power and
ram on a graphics card regardless of someone sitting at the actual
console? (my hunch is that it doesn't but I'm asking to be safe)

Does it make sense to build a raid 1+0 array for the
drives on this system or is raid 5 sufficient?

Finally, if anyone thinks I'm going down the wrong path
entirely for building a system to run Arc Info. Please suggest any
alternatives you have.

Cheers,
Alex Speaks
