Subject: [gislist] TIGER Data Translation Discussion List
Date:  09/07/2005 08:55:01 PM
From:  Bill Thoen

I've been experimenting with building a TIGER translator and geocoder
using MS Access, and mostly having success with it, but I've also run into
some problems and had some questions. So I was wondering if there was a
discussion list for TIGER translation software developers?

Failing that, does anyone here know the proper way to extract all the
county border lines from a TIGER data set? I assumed that you select all
lines from RT1 where COUNTYL or COUNTYR equals the county FIPS code (but
not both) and then string them together into one or more closed polygons.
This works for every county I've tried except for Broomfield, CO. When I
try it on that one, I just get digital ca-ca (polyline fragments.) So,
either the Census Bureau screwed up, or I'm not doing this right. I'm
inclined to think that I've got it wrong...

I'd also like to discuss with folks how they approach building a TIGER
data translator. The US Census Bureau puts out an awesome free resource
but I'm sure anyone who's tackled it has got a couple of questions about
methods for building GIS data sets from it.

So... any help for this GIS pilgrim?
