Subject: [gislist] Garmin Map Data?
Date:  09/18/2005 09:40:01 AM
From:  Bill Thoen

Can someone who knows Garmin systems help this friend of mine? Also, is
the problem here that the USGS topo maps are way out of date, or is it the
MapSource CDROM set?

Subject: Garmin Map Data?

I have a little Garmin eTrex Legend that I've used for several years for
coarse mapping and locating benthic sampling points. Recently I spent almost
$100 for the MapSource Topo cdrom set that's supposed to be equivalent to the
USGS 100K maps, because I need more detail than provided on the shipping data
set.

To my disgust, I find that the maps are more than 20 years old. My house
was built in 1983, but there are no streets shown for this neighborhood. I
just drove across Portland to a meeting and took the GPS receiver with me.
I-84 stops about a mile east of where it actually intersects with I-5. I-205
has a gap of several miles that was actually completed more than 25 years
ago. There are more errors, too.

For a company whose entire business is maps and the devices to display
them, data a quarter-century old (or older) is inexcusable. Especially when
they charge so much money for the cdroms.

Do you know if it's possible to load other map sources into Garmin
products? Or, can you suggest someone who might know?

I'd like to make a lot of noise about this. Garmin needs a major kick in
their revenues to wake them up and have them provide current map data.

Rich
