Rich,
I did a similar project in college once. I converted the shape files to grids then subtracted the two. The cells must be small enough to have 1 tree per cell. The difference (depending on the direction of your math) leaves you with a positive number for all the trees that exceed the imaginary surface. You can then associate this back to your original point file.

We have a 3D polygon that is an imaginary surface above the airfield. We also have a 3D point feature that represents trees. I want to be able to select any tree that pokes above the imaginary surface, and not the ones that are below it. Does anyone know how to do this? We have access to basically the whole suite of ESRI products. Thanks in advance.
