Subject: Re: [gislist] [AV] Different Coordinate Systems

From:  True, Cynthia D.

This doesn't really make sense. An ArcMap project file ends with a
.mxd, while a shape file is actually several files ending with .shp,
.shx, .dbf, among others. A pGDB ends with .mdb. I don't think you
should be using a shapefile to open ArcMap. It sounds like your ArcMap
project (.mxd) is messed up. If you click in the grey bar at the bottom
of your ArcMap project, you should be able to add all the tool bars and
menu bars. The ones with a check in front of the name are already
displayed somewhere, but it could be outside your screen display area.
If so, delete you normal.mxt, and you will go back to the out of the box
configuration. If all you want to do is change the projection of the
data frame, click on the data frame (looks like 3 yellow sheets stacked)
in the table of contents. Choose properties -> Coordinate System and
select a projection that matches your data layers.

Subject: [gislist] [AV] Different Coordinate Systems

Hi everyone,

I am running ArtMAP 9.1.

I have a shapefile which I use almost daily and therefore have it as a
desktop icon.
Recently, I (we) have suffered several server crashes. As a result, when
I open up ArcMAP thru the shapefile, all I get is the drawing area and
table of contents. The menus are all gone and I have been unable to
restore them. So, to resolve this, I open up a blank drawing
(fortunately, I use dual screens) and copy the layers of the table of
contents over to the new one and save it as the project shapefile. This
works fine.

However, when I start editing, the layers in the 'Personal Geodatabase'
now come up as being "in a different coordinate system than the map.":
My question is this: "How can I cause these layers and the map to return
to being in the same coordinate system?"

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

TIA
Art
