Subject: [gislist] GOOGLEMAPS?
Date:  10/22/2005 05:45:01 PM
From:  Michael Morin

All,

I am a retired GIS/IT professional who has used ESRI products since
1982. Google Maps is a huge jump forward in delivering spatial content
to the masses. I think the 'free' model is here to stay and adds what
is needed today in the GIS arena...competition. When I was working for
the state the cost of software was not a major concern, but when you
join the ranks of private life these costs can be daunting.

I've loaded vector and raster data using Oracle/SDE and ArcGIS with a
web-based product called ARCIMS all in a Sun Unix environment. Delivery
of some vector datasets was sluggist. On the other hand, Google is fast
in delivering content...especially 3D content. Since I am not totally
in sink with their delivery mechanism I think their success must be the
OS they are using which is unix or linux based on perhaps Sun based AMD
blades in some sort of cluster. I have a satellite connection since i
live in a rural area of Illinois and I can go anyware in the world in a
2D or 3D plain quickly. Maps can be saved in tiff or jpeg format and
brought into ESRI products as a graphic...from there annotation can be
added. All and all a great product and Googles new association with Sun
Microsystems and Open Source is a positive move with all of us users
benefiting.

As for data, that too can be very very expensive...especially
raster-based data...so having it for free is nothing short of GREAT.

I applaud their efforts and incourage more development and cooperation.

Regards to all.
