I go with the option of comma separated/delimited file. Right now you store the lat/long of your survey and can later bring this into any GIS software. Many of the latest GIS softwares have the option of importing a text file. You can also generate the path/route of your survey depending on the frequency of points collected. That is, you can generate a route using many utilities like AutoLISP or MDL. Use this route to overlay on a image or base map and locate the points of interest (whale occurence, whale/vessel interactions). -Sreeram.
