Subject: Re: [gislist] MapServer vs. ArcIMS
Date:  11/09/2005 09:25:02 AM
From:  Tripp Corbin

First let me say I am not a programmer but have used sites powered by
both ArcIMS and MapServer. To be honest both can be used to create and
power very similar websites so that enduser can not really tell the
difference. Our programmers created a three websites using MapGuide by
Autodesk, ArcIMS by ESRI and MapServer. Each site was created to be a
mirror of the others so we could compare performance and capability.
What we found was they were all about the same as long as you had a good
programmer that could create the code need to run the sites. If you do
not have a capable programmer then the chance of you getting a usable
site using MapServer was almost impossible. ArcIMS was by far the
easiest to create a very basic but useable site right out of the box.
MapGuide was somewhere in the middle.

I hope this helps

Subject: [gislist] MapServer vs. ArcIMS

Hello,

For almost two years now, our organization has used ArcIMS to serve maps
on the web. I attended a workshop which demonstrated MapServer recently
and found it quite interesting. I would like to know what people out in
the GIS community think about the two products. How do they compare?

Also is there any documentation out there describing how both could be
installed on the same machine to compare them? I use IIS as my web
server software.

Thanks,
