Subject: [gislist] SUM: Garmin GPSMAP 60CS to ArcGIS 9.0
Date:  11/11/2005 03:10:01 AM
From:  Vassil Vassilev

Dear all, thanks to James R. Readel and David T.
Hughes who replied. They confirmed my knowledge that
ArcGIS does not support USB connect options for the
GPS.
Here are their suggestions:

1.
ArcGIS is looking for a serial (com port) connection.
Your message is unclear regarding connectivity
hardware. With only a USB port available to you,
maybe this will help.
You can use a USB Serial Adapter such as:
http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Product_Id=
20938
or Bluetooth:
http://www.aircables.net/serial.html
I prefer the AIRcable since it is a "wire-free"
option.
Also check your Device Manager to verify a Com port
assignment exists.

James R. Readel

2.
Probably someone else has already told you this, but
if not here's my opinion: I haven't checked ArcGIS
9.X, but in prior versions their GPS support did not
include USB connect options. There are drivers out
there
that make your USB 'look like' a serial port to the
operating system, and these sometimes work for some
things (for instance, the Delorme USB/Serial
software works with ArcGIS) but that shuts off access
to the device through the USB channel for other
software. To my knowledge there is not a good
solution to the problem right now, but if you hear of
one, I'd like to know about it, too.

And here is the solution that I found. I bought a
cable USB-810 to Serial(DB9)with a driver for it (it
is from a Chinese manufacturer and here in Bulgaria
it's quite cheap - 10-15$). So I took the cable from
my old Garmin 12CX, and the Chinese cable. With both
of them the USB 'look like' a serial port to the
operating system (as David suggested) and everything
is just fine with my portable PC and GPSMAP 60CS which
now I am able to command vocaly to store GPS points,
to make polygons by the tracks, to change their
attributes, etc. If you are interested from this
technology visit:

Best regards and once again thanks for the support,

Vassil Vassilev
