Converting layers from a geodatabase to Microstation can be a real pain. Why don't you download SAFE software's FME 14-day trial - it is an excellent data conversion tool and will do the conversion you require without all the fiddly stuff. I have used FME quite extensively in the past, and it is a robust tool that does its job really well.
