Subject: Re: [gislist] live interpolation on the web?

From:  Wim Koolhoven

Hi Rick,

Sounds like something for the WPS protocol as now is available as
discussion paper (OGC 05-007r4). WPS stands for Web Processing Service.
I do not know whether Surfer is already busy implementing this draft
specification.

Please check http://portal.opengeospatial.org/files/?artifact_id=12184

Wim Koolhoven

Subject: [gislist] live interpolation on the web?

Looking for your advice and experiences for this one...

We are looking at getting an interactive web page that would allow a
user to insert their coordinates and some other parameters (such as
rainfall or
temperature) then run an interpolation routine to generate a map on
demand.

We currently use Surfer (Golden Software) to interpolate various data
(rainfall, temperature, crop disease risk, etc) and export a .gif image
that gets posted to the web on a daily basis. This is done in an
automated routine from data in our database through VB. Our webmaster
currently uses Cold Fusion for much of our live web interactions.

In some instances, this may require that the software go to the database
and recalculate values from the beginning of the season (for example,
disease risk values are cumulative). In this case, the data entered and
returned would be stored in our database. In some cases, it will be
nothing more than an ephemeral map that can be printed but which will
disappear once the application is closed. In this case the data need not
be saved.

If anyone has done or seen anything like this, some pointers to web
pages would be appreciated, as would advice on your experience with such
a service.

Thanks
