Mara Kaminowitz has provided a link to a cartogram prepared at the University of Michigan. Thank you, Mara. There are several representations of the voting pattern using electoral votes, percent of population, population and other factors as scaling factors.

At the bottom there are links to the code and some more information. It might not be directly applicable but the methods may be useful to do something similiar to a traffic map, especially if the map is only for presentation and doesn't have to be a functioning network.
