Subject: [gislist] Projection problem
Date:  01/04/2006 04:55:02 PM
From:  Chris Hardenbrook

I have recently started working in the Public Works Dept of a small
municipality and have inherited some shape files that have "corrupt"
(for lack of a more accurate term) projections. One of the files,
for instance, is the locations and attributes of 343 fire
hydrants. We are on the Santa Monica Bay coast and use NAD83 State
Plane FIPS V 0405 (US feet and 1980 GRS) and the file in question
says that is what it is using, too. Instead, however, of being in
the vicinity of 118 degrees West and 33 degrees North, it exists in
the vicinity of 67 degs W and 34 degs N. Nothing I can do will
convince it to come back home. We're using ArcGIS 9.1 (no extensions).

I have used various ways to redefine the projection including
deleting the .prj file (same as hitting the "clear" button in the
spatial reference properties dialog). I can rebuild this file from
scratch if need be but I am curious to know how to restore this file
(I mean, what if it were 3,430 hydrants!) Has anyone else run into
such a thing? Any suggestions are welcome, thanks in advance.
