Subject: Re: [gislist] "Distorted" Maps Should be Scaling to parameter ofinterest.

Dick,

Very interesting subject. I work for a firm that delivers real time and
predictive traffic flow data in the United States (soon Western Europe). We
also have plans to provide nationwide incident (accident) coverage as well.
We're always looking for better ways to present our data and your posts have
intrigued me. I am familiar with polygonal cartograms but, until now, have
never thought of using these in a linear fashion.

Can I ask for whom you work and if you would be interested in looking at
creating a few algorithms together to highlight traffic flow bottlenecks due
to time of day, etc. You have really got my wheels turning :-)

Regards,

Reily Love

Mara Kaminowitz has provided a link to a cartogram prepared at the
University of Michigan.
Thank you, Mara. There are several representations of the voting pattern
using electoral votes, percent of population, population and other factors
as scaling factors.

At the bottom there are links to the code and some more information.
It might not be directly applicable but the methods may be useful to do
something similiar to a traffic map, especially if the map is only for
presentation and doesn't have to be a functioning network.
