A vacancy exists in the Meraka Institute for a

Researcher: Automated Image Processing

The position is in the ICT4EO (ICT for Earth Observation) Research =

Group, which focuses on Sensor Web Enablement (SWE). The Sensor Web is =

an emerging technology trend that promises to revolutionise Earth =

Observation. The research is relevant in context of GEOSS/SAEOS =

architecture. The group is working closely with the Open Geospatial =

Consortium (OGC) on SWE, of which the outcome will be a global network =

of interoperable sensors and sensor networks. The research is directed =

at developing intelligent middle ware to harvest meaningful information =

from the Sensor Web and they are currently investigating how semantic =

reasoning and knowledge representation can be used to configure the =

Sensor Web to observe particular phenomena.

Qualifications, skills & experience needed:

=A7 An MSc (Applied Mathematics / Computer Science / Electrical =

Engineering / Mathematics / Physics) with the intention to study towards =

a PhD
=A7 At least 2 years experience in digital image processing
=A7 Applied mathematics: feature detection and matching, optimization, =

geometry, statistics
=A7 Remote sensing skills: geometric/radiometric image correction, =

photogrammetry, geography basics
=A7 Good knowledge of OGC specifications
=A7 Object oriented software design, C++, Java or Python
=A7 Experience in OSSIM development will be highly advantageous

Responsibilities:

=A7 Research and development of image processing techniques for remote =

sensing data sets
=A7 Implement adaptable, self-describing automatic image/vector
processes
=A7 Use standards and unify the processes (OGC services, ISO), in the =

context of the Sensor Web Enablement
=A7 Build on top of existing open source software (OSSIM, GDAL, POSTGIS,

GEOTOOLS, GEOSERVER, MAPSERVER)

Person profile:

The ideal person would have enhanced analytical problem solving =

abilities. He/she would be a dynamic self-starter not requiring much =

supervision. Communication skills, good writing skills and fluency in =

English are important as he/she would need to interact and communicate =

with technical staff on a daily basis. The ability to work as part of a =

team and/or independently is essential.

Remuneration will be market related and commensurate with qualifications =

and experience. The appointment will be made in accordance with CSIR=92s =

Employee Equity Initiatives.
