A vacancy exists in the Meraka Institute for a
Researcher: Automated Image Processing
The position is in the ICT4EO (ICT for Earth Observation) Research =
Group, which focuses on Sensor Web Enablement (SWE). The Sensor Web is =
an emerging technology trend that promises to revolutionise Earth =
Observation. The research is relevant in context of GEOSS/SAEOS =
architecture. The group is working closely with the Open Geospatial =
Consortium (OGC) on SWE, of which the outcome will be a global network =
of interoperable sensors and sensor networks. The research is directed =
at developing intelligent middle ware to harvest meaningful information =
from the Sensor Web and they are currently investigating how semantic =
reasoning and knowledge representation can be used to configure the =
Sensor Web to observe particular phenomena.

=A7 An MSc (Applied Mathematics / Computer Science / Electrical =
Engineering / Mathematics / Physics) with the intention to study towards =
a PhD =A7 At least 2 years experience in digital image processing =A7 Applied mathematics: feature detection and matching, optimization, =
geometry, statistics =A7 Remote sensing skills: geometric/radiometric image correction, =
photogrammetry, geography basics =A7 Good knowledge of OGC specifications =A7 Object oriented software design, C++, Java or Python =A7 Experience in OSSIM development will be highly advantageous
Responsibilities:
=A7 Research and development of image processing techniques for remote =
sensing data sets =A7 Implement adaptable, self-describing automatic image/vector processes =A7 Use standards and unify the processes (OGC services, ISO), in the =
context of the Sensor Web Enablement =A7 Build on top of existing open source software (OSSIM, GDAL, POSTGIS,
GEOTOOLS, GEOSERVER, MAPSERVER)
