Subject: Re: [gislist] Help in designing a computer
Date:  02/17/2006 12:20:01 PM
From:  Michael Pesses

I have been very happy with my Sony Vaio K25, on which I run ArcGIS 9.0, Adobe Photoshop 7, and Adobe Illustrator CS2. It was under $1500, very fast, and came with a DVD burner. The screen is beautiful (their Xbrite technology makes a huge difference).

My only complaints are a very short battery life, it's heavy, and Sony loads a lot of useless software onto the machine. You can always delete the programs that you don't need, and it's heavy because it's such a powerful computer. It's a great choice if you want something smaller than a desktop PC, but still able to do serious work.

Good Afternoon,

I am interested in buying a computer notebook that will serve as a
personal computer as well as one that I can use for desktop GIS (ArcView
9.1) and desktop web and graphic design (Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia
Dreamweaver). Could you recommend a computer manufacturer and a
configuration for this computer including the size of the video card. My
budget is between $1000 -1500 US.

Thank you,

DuBose Griffin
